A little something(s) to keep you occupied
By Melissa | December 15, 2006
[Oooh, check it out--third day in a row of posting! I told you I'd keep up with the "posting more often" thing.]
I feel like I need to pass on some things that have made me happy lately so that perhaps they may make you happy, too. So here are some reviews. And links, too, if you want to buy stuff.
Books I’ve read lately:
Running with Scissors, Augusten Burroughs. Single-handedly the most disturbing, twisted book I’ve ever read–mostly because it’s true. It’s the memoirs of some guy, and no, I haven’t seen the movie. But it’s a quick, funny read if you can control your disgust at some of the scenes.
The Secret Life of Lobsters, Trevor Corson. Got this for Christmanukah last year (it’s “Christmanukah” because my Jewish roommate gave it to me. That’s the name for the we made up for the holidays). I’m only halfway through it, but it’s worth reviewing already. It’s non-fiction, but it’s written so well that scientists and non-scientists alike will be well entertained.
Music I’ve loved lately:
Speak for Yourself, Imogen Heap. [Do you italicize album names? I'm not sure, but I'm going with it.] You may know her “Let Go” song from the end of the movie “Garden State” (what about movie names? Italics? No?). I’m not sure how you classify her music (I would go with poppy trip-hop–like if you gave Massive Attack some happy pills). I saw her live at the Tabernacle a couple of weeks ago, and it was a great show. If you’re a chick, you would dig her music.
Oh No, Ok Go. I wrote about them before.
Blogs I’ve linked on the right side of this page:
All & Sundry. This blog has me in stitches almost everyday. She writes about life with a kid, and it’s a total riot. Here’s a taste or two.
Adopt-a-microbe. For the nerd in you. Just ridiculously cute drawings of microbes.
Underwater Superhero. My friend lives in South Africa with lions and other charismatic megafauna. [napoleondynamitevoice]Lucky. [/napoleondynamitevoice]
Antarctica blog. Some guy is doing an artsy NSF grant in Antarctica and posts some kick-ass pictures.
TV shows into which I’ve been sucked:
“House.” Gosh, it’s fun to watch Hugh Laurie be mean to everybody.
“Scrubs.” Always a winner, but I think the character plotlines have taken a turn for the worse this season. Specifically (and stop reading if you don’t want a spoiler) the part where JD has fathered a child. Doesn’t make sense to me. Josh and I have been Netflixing all of the old seasons, so I’m pretty close to maxing out on this show.
“Lost.” Is on hiatus, but I’m not too sad because this season has been sort of slow and blah anyway.
Movies I’ve seen lately (in an actual theater!):
Borat. Funny. Some of the scenes have left me traumatized for life, though. I really don’t need to see a fat naked guy running around, do I? Ick.
Happy Feet. The first half is a cute fluffy kid movie, the second half is a dark cautionary environmentalist tale. A little odd, but whatever.
That’s all. For now.

Good book choices. Julia loaned me “The Secret Life of Lobsters” and I was mostly excited that I’ve met some of the characters. Also, one of our lab’s former undergrads gave me “Running with Scissors” because it made her think of me. Should I be offended by that?
Posted by: Emily on December 15th, 2006 at 7:35 pmI’m with you on Scrubs this season. You’ve still got your random one-liners from Elliot (What are you looking at Beard Face?! I will mount you right now!) and the Janitor (Oh no, I’ve punched a whale.), not to mention your random MARCHING BAND, but what is up with the ooooey-goooey baby stuff?! It’s not funny…
If you’ve not yet seen all of season four, I highly recommend it - never a disappointment! One of my favorite episodes: when Ted gets a ride in Kelso’s convertible and later gets frightened by the janitor! HAHAHAHA!! Now that’s good shit!
