Two cents on three albums

Recent albums I put on my iPod and my opinions thereof.

Yeah, I’m not ashamed to say I’ve got this on my iPod. Ok, well, maybe a little. But I know I’m not the only one (I’m looking at you, Anita!). I’ve listened to this album a few times because I really, really wanted a new CD that I could dance to like an idiot. But other than the song “4 Minutes,” I just can’t get very into this album. I enjoyed her previous album a lot more. Go figure.

Here’s another one I’m a tiny bit ashamed of: Death Cab for Cutie’s Narrow Stairs. I should probably start gobbing on the black eyeliner and wearing my hair in front of my face, right? They had one song on the radio I liked, and the deejay swore up and down that the rest of the album was simply fantastic. And I’m a sucker for peer pressure, so I downloaded it. Again, another album that just doesn’t do it for me. At least it’s not as utterly depressing as their previous album (its name escapes me at the moment, sorry).

Ah, MIA’s new album Kala. Ok, MIA’s music is a bit…weird. The uninitiated might not really enjoy it. It’s like Bollywood meets hip hop meets dance music. Loved her previous album Arular to pieces. This one has taken a little getting used to because some of the songs are a little out there. But the more I listen to it, the more it grows on me. The song “Boyz” is catchy, and I adore the cover of The Pixies’ “Where is My Mind?” in “20 Dollar.” She’s also got a song featuring Timbaland on there, because I hear that’s what everyone’s doing these days.

Anybody got any good suggestions for music I should download? My stockpile needs refreshing.

  1. Muddy Waters. I got 20 albums from him last night. Good stuff.

  2. I am dying for new stuff too but have got no idea what to try. I’m sick of everything I’ve got.

I’ve been meaning to pick up the new Elbow album. I don’t know if it is any good yet, but you might like their other albums. They’re like Radhiohead, but not as weird.

I might have to check out MIA’s older album…

  3. Lately, I’ve been into bluesy rock. So I’ve been listening to The White Stripes, The Black Keys, some Jet, some Rocketface.

Like you, however, I’m still looking for more stuff.

  4. Emo Melissa…funny image. :D

BTW, I use iTunes to preview a lot of albums before I waste time downloading anything from wherever. Good way to find some fairly obscure stuff too. The Apple Empire has a few good uses, aside from their mind control devices we all use unwittingly. :-P

  5. My latest 3 downloads are:

    NIN – The Slip
The Raconteurs – Consolers of the Lonely
    Disfear – Live the Storm

and I’m liking them in precisely that order

  6. I think Josh downloaded that NIN album. I’ll have to give it a listen.

  7. It’s alright. A couple songs are pretty good.

  8. NIN releases something every other week, apparently.

  9. tracks 2-6 on the new NIN album are the only ones i listen to, the rest of the ambient instrumentals i just skip

  10. yeah, I can agree to that. I think my preference selection is a bit narrower than “2-6″ but then I’ve only listened to the whole album twice, then specific songs (don’t remember exactly which ones) a few more than that

  11. [...] check out this video. It’s beautifully edited, and it also features an MIA song off of her new album. I’ve watched it about 50 [...]
